How to Update Roblox on PC, Mac, iPhone, Android & Fix Update Errors

How to update Roblox: launch the desktop app or install the latest version from your device's official app store. Fix Error 280 if updates fail.

Here is how to update Roblox in one line: on a computer, just open Roblox and it downloads the latest version by itself; on a phone, tablet or console, update it through the official app store. If an update fails or you see “Your version of Roblox may be out of date” (Error Code 280), restart the device, then reinstall Roblox from its official source. This guide walks through every device step by step, explains the error codes that block updates, and shows which fixes Roblox’s own support team recommends.

How to update Roblox: Roblox logo over game screenshots
Roblox updates itself on computers; phones, tablets and consoles update through their app stores.

Safety first: Roblox is free and every real update is free. Never download a Roblox “update”, “patch” or “client” from a YouTube link, Discord server or file-sharing site. Modified Roblox apps break Roblox’s rules, can steal your account and can get it suspended or banned. The only safe sources are roblox.com, the Microsoft Store, the Apple App Store, Google Play, the Amazon Appstore, the Samsung Galaxy Store and your console’s own store.

Does Roblox update automatically?

Mostly, yes. On Windows and Mac, the Roblox app checks for a new version every time you launch it or join an experience, and installs it before the game loads. That is why there is no “Update Roblox” button in the settings menu, despite what some guides claim. So on a computer, how to update Roblox mostly comes down to closing it and opening it again. On iPhone, iPad and Android, updates come through the app store, and they install automatically if you have automatic app updates turned on.

Updates usually fail for one of four reasons: the app was open during the update, the installation files are corrupted, the internet connection dropped, or something such as an antivirus program or VPN blocked the download.

Quick checks before you update

  • Restart the device. Roblox’s support team recommends restarting before you try a reinstall. It clears a stuck update more often than you would expect.
  • Check your connection. Load a website or switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
  • Check whether Roblox is down. If many players have problems at once, the issue is on Roblox’s side. Its official status page is status.roblox.com.
  • Update your operating system. Roblox recommends running the latest iOS or Android version before installing the mobile app.
  • Check the date and time. A wrong clock on an iPhone or iPad can block Roblox from connecting.

How to update Roblox on a Windows PC

Roblox normally updates itself when you open it. If it does not:

  1. Close Roblox completely, including any Roblox window in the taskbar.
  2. Restart your PC.
  3. Open Roblox from the desktop shortcut or the Start menu and let it finish downloading.
  4. If it still fails, uninstall it: open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (on Windows 10: Apps & features), find Roblox and select Uninstall.
  5. Download a fresh copy from roblox.com by logging in and pressing Play on any experience. The installer starts automatically.

Installed Roblox from the Microsoft Store? Then the Store handles updates. Open the Microsoft Store, select Library and click Get updates.

Clear corrupted Roblox files on Windows

If a reinstall does not help, Roblox’s help center says to remove the leftover Roblox folder before installing again. This deletes only Roblox’s local app files. Your account, avatar, Robux and game progress are stored online and are not affected.

  1. Uninstall Roblox as shown above.
  2. Press Windows + R, type cmd and press Enter.
  3. Type the two commands below, pressing Enter after each one:
cd AppDataLocal
rmdir /s Roblox
  1. Type y and press Enter when Windows asks you to confirm.
  2. Restart the computer and reinstall Roblox from roblox.com.

How to update Roblox on a Mac

The Mac app also updates itself when you launch it. If it is stuck on an old version:

  1. Quit Roblox completely (Command + Q).
  2. Restart your Mac and open Roblox again.
  3. If that fails, open Applications, drag Roblox to the Trash and empty the Trash.
  4. Go to roblox.com in your browser, log in and press Play on any experience. You will be asked to install Roblox. If the installer does not open by itself, find Roblox.dmg in your Downloads folder and open it.

Still not working? Roblox’s Mac troubleshooting page suggests two deeper fixes. First, press Command + Space, paste ~/Library/Logs/Roblox/, open the folder and delete everything in it. Second, delete the Roblox settings files that start with com.roblox in your Library’s Preferences folder. Roblox rebuilds them the next time it starts.

How to update Roblox on iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the App Store.
  2. Tap your profile picture in the top-right corner.
  3. Scroll to the list of upcoming updates and pending updates.
  4. Find Roblox and tap Update. You can also search for Roblox and tap Update on its page.

No update button and the app still says it is out of date? Reinstall it:

  1. Press and hold the Roblox icon on your home screen.
  2. Tap Remove App, then Delete App, and confirm.
  3. Open the App Store, search for Roblox and download it again.
  4. Log back in with your username and password.

To stop this happening again, turn on Settings > App Store > App Updates.

How to update Roblox on Android

  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Tap your profile picture in the top-right corner.
  3. Tap Manage apps & device.
  4. Under Updates available, find Roblox and tap Update.

If that does not work, open Play Store, search for Roblox, tap Uninstall and then Install. Roblox also suggests clearing the app’s data first: go to Settings > Apps > Roblox > Storage and tap Clear data, then reinstall.

Got Roblox from the Samsung Galaxy Store or the Amazon Appstore (Amazon Fire tablets)? Update it in that same store. On a Chromebook, Roblox updates through Google Play. Roblox does not support emulators such as BlueStacks, and it blocks rooted Android phones and jailbroken iPhones.

How to update Roblox on Xbox, PlayStation and Meta Quest

  • Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One: press the Xbox button, go to My games & apps > See all > Manage > Updates, and update Roblox if it is listed.
  • PlayStation 5 and PS4: highlight Roblox on the home screen, press the Options button and choose Check for Update.
  • Meta Quest: open your Library, filter by Updates and update Roblox.

Consoles usually install updates automatically when they are in rest mode, so a missing update is often fixed by simply restarting the console.

Fix common Roblox update errors

Many Roblox error codes look like update problems but have different causes. Here is what the most common ones mean, based on Roblox’s support articles:

Error What it means Best fix
280 Your version of Roblox is out of date or damaged Update or reinstall from the official source; on Windows, also delete the Roblox folder
266 Connection timed out because of a slow or unstable network Restart the router, try another network
268 Kicked for “unexpected client behavior”: usually network problems or another program, such as antivirus, interfering Close other programs, check antivirus, reinstall the official app
277 Lost connection to the game server Check Roblox status, restart router, try another network
403 The Windows app failed to start properly when launched from the website Reinstall, clear the Roblox folder, check firewall and VPN

Error Code 280: “Your version of Roblox may be out of date”

This is the update error. Roblox says it happens when there is a problem with the Roblox version on your PC, Mac or mobile device, and its fix is a clean reinstall, because installing a new copy also updates the app to the latest version. Follow the reinstall steps for your device above. On Windows, delete the AppDataLocalRoblox folder before reinstalling. Roblox’s full instructions are in its Error Code 280 help article.

Error Code 266 and 277: connection problems

These are network errors, not update errors. Restart your router, move closer to it or plug in a cable, and try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data. Turn off any VPN or proxy for a moment. If the error only happens on one network, such as school Wi-Fi, that network may be blocking Roblox.

Error Code 268: unexpected client behavior

Roblox links this error to network problems and to other programs, such as antivirus software, that interfere with Roblox’s permissions. It also appears if you use a modified Roblox app, an “executor” or a cheat tool. Remove any such software, which can lead to account suspensions, and reinstall the official client.

Error Code 403: access denied

This one appears on Windows PCs when the Roblox app launched from the website fails to start properly. Reinstall Roblox, clear the Roblox folder as described above, and make sure your antivirus or firewall allows Roblox to connect.

Which fix to try first

Your problem Try this
Roblox says it is out of date Restart, then update or reinstall from the official store or roblox.com
The update gets stuck or never finishes Close Roblox fully, restart the device, open Roblox again
Reinstalling on Windows did not help Uninstall, delete AppDataLocalRoblox, restart, reinstall
Mac keeps failing Delete the app, clear the Roblox logs, reinstall from roblox.com
No Update button on iPhone or Android Delete and reinstall the app from the store
Error 266, 268 or 277 Fix the connection first: router, other network, VPN off

When to contact Roblox Support

If you have followed every step on how to update Roblox and it still will not install after a clean reinstall from an official source, contact Roblox Support through its help site. Roblox asks you to include:

  • Your Roblox username
  • The exact error message or code
  • Your device model and operating system version
  • The steps that lead to the problem and what you have already tried
  • Any recent changes to your device or internet connection

Parents: if your child plays on a shared family computer, check that no unofficial Roblox tools have been installed, since those are the most common cause of repeated crashes and kicks. Roblox update FAQ

How to update Roblox on PC?

Open Roblox and it updates automatically before the game loads. If it does not, restart your PC, uninstall Roblox from Settings > Apps, and reinstall it from roblox.com. If you installed it from the Microsoft Store, use Library > Get updates in the Store instead.

Why won’t Roblox update?

The most common causes are Roblox being open during the update, corrupted installation files, a weak internet connection, or antivirus or VPN software blocking the download. Restarting and then reinstalling from the official source fixes most cases.

Will I lose my progress if I reinstall Roblox?

No. Your account, avatar, Robux and game progress are saved on Roblox’s servers, not on your device. After reinstalling, log in with the same account and everything is still there.

What does Error Code 280 mean?

It means your Roblox app is out of date or has damaged files. Update or reinstall Roblox from the official store or roblox.com. On Windows, also delete the AppDataLocalRoblox folder before reinstalling.

Is there an Update Roblox button in the settings?

No. Roblox updates itself on Windows and Mac when you open it, and through the app store on phones, tablets and consoles. Guides that tell you to look for an update button in Roblox’s settings are wrong.

Is it safe to download a Roblox update from another website?

No. Only install Roblox from roblox.com or an official app store. Files offered elsewhere can contain malware or modified versions of Roblox, which can steal your account and break Roblox’s rules.
