Grok vs ChatGPT: What Can Grok Do That ChatGPT Can’t in 2026?

Grok can analyze live X posts, generate videos and bundle AI with X Premium and Cursor. ChatGPT still leads in research, productivity and business tools.

In the Grok vs ChatGPT matchup, Grok’s biggest advantage in November 2026 is something ChatGPT cannot copy: it lives inside X. Grok can search and reason over live posts, trends and public reactions on the platform, it answers questions about a post without leaving X, and it now comes bundled with X Premium and the Cursor coding agent in a single subscription. ChatGPT remains the broader, more mature everyday assistant. We checked xAI’s and OpenAI’s official pages on November 2, 2026, to separate what is truly unique to Grok from what both can do.

Grok’s edge comes from X; ChatGPT’s comes from the breadth of its tools.

What Grok can do that ChatGPT can’t

Capability Grok ChatGPT Why it matters
Search live X posts Yes, with the X Search tool No native equivalent Track breaking news, viral posts and public sentiment as they happen on X
Explain a post inside X Yes No Grok is built into X, so you can ask about a post without copying it anywhere
Video generation in the same app Yes, Grok Imagine at 480p, 720p or 1080p Not listed in ChatGPT plans OpenAI’s video tool, Sora, has run as a separate app
AI, coding agent and social network in one plan Yes, The X Subscription No One payment covers Grok, Grok Bot, Cursor and X Premium
Built into a car Yes, in Tesla vehicles No Voice access to Grok while driving, in supported vehicles

The common thread is X. Grok’s model itself has no special knowledge of the present: according to xAI’s developer documentation, Grok 4.7 has a knowledge cutoff of May 2026 and has no access to real-time events unless the Web Search or X Search tools are enabled. What makes Grok different is that X Search gives it direct access to a live social network that ChatGPT does not have.

Where ChatGPT still leads

Grok vs ChatGPT price ladder

xAI has replaced its separate SuperGrok, Cursor and X Premium plans with The X Subscription, which puts all three on one bill. Existing subscribers can keep their old plans. This is how the new tiers line up against ChatGPT at each price, using US prices.

Monthly price Grok (The X Subscription) ChatGPT
$0 Free: daily Grok access, a starter Cursor allowance, standard X Free: unlimited text chats with GPT-6, limited tools
$8 Plus: more Grok and Cursor usage, X checkmark, creator tools, fewer ads on X Go: more messages, uploads, images and voice; may include ads
$20 No plan at this price Plus: advanced GPT-6 reasoning, deep research, Codex, Projects
$30 Premium: 4x Plus usage, with SuperGrok, Cursor Pro and X Premium+ included No plan at this price
$100 Super: 15x Plus usage Pro 100: GPT-6 Astra Pro reasoning, Dot agent
$200 Ultra: 50x Plus usage Pro 200: a larger allowance
$500 No plan at this price Pro 500: the highest allowance

At $8, both companies sell a starter plan, but they point in opposite directions on ads: OpenAI says ChatGPT Go may include ads, while Grok’s $8 Plus tier reduces ads on X. The best value on the Grok side is Premium at $30, which xAI says bundles benefits that used to cost $90 a month combined. On paid plans, Grok usage is a single pool shared between the Grok apps, the Grok tab on X and Cursor.

Grok 4.7 and GPT-6: the models

Grok’s current flagship is Grok 4.7, which launched on September 21, 2026. xAI’s documentation lists a context window of 500,000 tokens and API prices of $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens. xAI recommends it for coding and everything except dedicated audio, image and video tasks, which run on separate models such as Grok Imagine Video 1.5.

ChatGPT runs on the GPT-6 family. The free plan uses GPT-6 Luna, Plus adds GPT-6 Sol and Astra reasoning models, and Pro adds Pro reasoning powered by GPT-6 Astra. On ChatGPT Pro, the reasoning context window reaches 400,000 tokens, below Grok 4.7’s 500,000 in the API.

Important caveats about Grok and X

Live access to X is powerful, but it is not the same as accuracy. Posts on X can include rumors, misinformation, sarcasm and coordinated manipulation, and an AI that summarizes them can repeat those errors with confidence. Treat Grok’s answers on breaking topics as a starting point and confirm them with primary sources such as official statements, filings or reporting from established outlets. This is the same standard we apply in our own editorial policy.

Also remember that Grok does not automatically know current events. Without its search tools, it only knows what was in its training data up to May 2026.

Bottom line

The honest answer to the Grok vs ChatGPT question is that Grok wins on one thing ChatGPT cannot match: real-time access to X, plus the convenience of bundling AI, Cursor and X Premium in one plan. Choose Grok if what matters most is what is happening on X right now, or if you already pay for X Premium. Choose ChatGPT if you want the more versatile everyday assistant for writing, research, coding and work. For more comparisons and AI news, visit our AI section.

Frequently asked questions

Is Grok better than ChatGPT?

Only for some tasks. Grok is better for live X posts, social trends and bundled X Premium benefits. ChatGPT is better as an all-around assistant for writing, research, coding and business use.

How much does Grok cost in 2026?

Under The X Subscription, Grok is free with limits, or $8 (Plus), $30 (Premium), $100 (Super) or $200 (Ultra) a month. Each plan also includes Cursor usage and X benefits.

Does Grok know about current events?

Only with its search tools turned on. Grok 4.7’s training data ends in May 2026; Web Search and X Search give it access to newer information.

Can ChatGPT read posts on X?

ChatGPT can search the web, but it has no native, built-in access to the live stream of X posts the way Grok does through X Search.

Can Grok make videos?

Yes. Grok Imagine generates video from text or images at 480p, 720p or 1080p. ChatGPT’s plans do not list video generation.
